Outdoor Portrait practice?
I am new to photography and trying to get some practice in. My girlfriend and two of his friends agreed let me practice on them. It will be a portrait session outdoors. My question is I have the Canon Rebel XS with Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Sigma Lens 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Telephoto zoom Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens Lens What should I use as a primary lens. I know that if you use 50 mm, but some not sure if shoule be the main lens I use and if so, which other lens best suited to these vaccines? So are some good tips or links to information useful in outdoor portraits. Thanks must also individual photos and then the three together. Please specify which lens in this case. Thank you very much.
The 50 mm is the sharpest lens you have listed. I want to be sure that any pictures and close-ups that make use of that lens. It also allows you more depth of field narrow, so that the subject "pop" of the fund. Do not use a grand opening to take the group picture, however.

Need a good Canon lens Under $230?
i will be using it on a canon rebel XS. I have the kit lens (18-55 mm). I would like to know any recommendations for a good lens for a trip (if i could carry only one lens, that would be perfect) , And if the third party lens (tamron, sigma …) would match the quality i would get with a Canon Lens.
I was looking at the tamron 18-200 mm, but noticed its focusing was really noisy, is this only on tamron or is it on all long range zoom lenses??
From your write-up I am assuming that your kit lens isn’t providing the range you want for tourist photos, primarily the telephoto side of things. I find it’s great for tourist photos but then I tend to shoot landscapes and people more than faraway closeups. Do you shoot a lot of faraway things like say, a closeup of a high clock tower or gargoyles several stories above you? Then something like an 18 to 200 would be a good idea. The downside (for non professionals) of Canon cameras is that Image Stabilization is in the lens and not the camera. So if you shoot at 200mm a lot, it will be a bit blurry if you choose a lens without IS. Though if you have a stable hand then it may not be a problem for you. My hands are a little shaky so I can’t live without it.
As for noise, it depends on the mechanical technology inside the lens. Older cheaper technology tends to be louder. Newer expensive one tends to be quieter. Well, that’s just a generalization but it’s overall true. Is noise a serious concern for you or are you just curious?
Tamron and Sigma lenses are usually not on par with Canon. They reverse engineer Canon’s lenses and try to make their lenses compatible. Tamron used to be the leader in making lenses that work with Canons, so even if you buy a second hand EF lens it should work with your XS just fine. Sigma, on the otherhand have a lousy track record BUT they’ve improved a lot and all their CURRENT lenses are compatible with few issues. As a professional I would never buy a Tamron or Sigma, but as a general user I think if you can get one really cheap then it is worth it. They are not bad lenses by any means. However, they are not as good as a Canon of equal price.
As for your price range… There are no new Canon lenses you can buy for that price that will give you the range you want. None that I can think of anyway unless you want to buy an older lens used. I’m not sure when you plan to go on your trip, I assume time is a factor so I won’t recommend obsolete lens to you.
I know it isn’t what you want to hear, but the 55-250mm is in your price range if you shop around. So called “walkaround lenses” like the 18-200 on a Canon cost money. At least $600.
