Opinion on the Canon 7D?

What is your opinion on the Canon 7D?
What subjects is it best suited to?

I was hoping to purchase one with wildlife in mind, along with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens.
200mm isn’t my PRIME choice, but I’ve only ever heard great comments on this lens. But the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM doesn’t have a good sharpness and resolution.
For a similar price range, what lens would you suggest? What’s your opinion on the two lenses mentioned?

I’m pretty keen on the 7D at the moment, but if you have any other suggestions for cameras suitable for wildlife photography (large animals with fur mostly), feel free to share.

wow, that’s a very impressive set of kit.

the 70-200 F/2.8L IS II is so highly recommended. And hte crop sensor really adds to your reach to 320mm.

Assuming you really can afford that much kit, I would also suggest extenders. THey can further multiply your reach by 1.4x and 2x. You do lose some light, but you gain extra reach. Up to 640 mm at f/5.6 (2x extender + cropped body). On the website (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/) you don’t lose much quality in using the 2x extender.

Even though you lose light, you are often shooting wildlife during hte day, when there is plenty light (i’m assuming).

I also know sigma has a variety of lenses to choose from. However, they are a little softer, and their auto focusing isn’t as fast or crisp as the Canon. The one advantage would be that you would be paying a mere fraction of what you paid for the canon.

I suggest looking at http://www.the-digital-picture.com/
they have iso chart comparision to quantify the standard of quality.

Of course the only true test is to take it out in hte field and decide how you like it.

between the nikon d300s and canon 7d which is a better camera overall?

I am looking to make the best investment for my money, I have no lenses yet so im not limited to any particular brand. They each have their advantages, but I want to know which one is a more professional grade camera. Also, which one is easier to navigate and best for shooting raw? HD video does not matter to me at all.

It depends on what you are going to be shooting. I have been a Nikon girl since my first 35mm film camera and have always had beautiful results and stayed very loyal to the brand. I purchased the D300S as an upgrade to my D200. I photograph families and children and sometimes weddings, so my subjects are primarily people. The D300S does not handle reds well, which is a bad thing when you photograph people. I switched to a Canon 7D which is equally great in low light and gives beautiful, creamy skin tones.

I know some people love their D300′s and I have even seen portrait photogs work that I really love that use that camera. But I would not ever look back on my decision.

As an owner of both (previous owner of D300s), I would suggest the 7D hands down.
