Canon macro lens dSLR dilemma?
I'm in the market for a macro lens for canon xsi me. The main use of this lens for macro photography would products, mainly jewelry and accessories, to create a web site. I wondered if the EF 50mm f/2.5 or the EF 100mm f/2.8 would be better than this. I am currently using the lens that comes with the camera, and I'm looking for a goal that can capture more detail / color. I just want to be taking pictures of actual products, such as necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, crowns, etc. They will be in a light box that is approximately 24 "x 24".
The 50mm macro is macro in size complete without an adapter (although with the crop factor of the XSi this becomes less of a problem) and also requires a fairly close distance work, which can affect your lighting options. Would be very very good for product shots (which is using a tripod, adjusting plate and mcro MF anyway) fast enough to focus on a gateway or portrait. This would make a great product lens with 1:1 reproduced and a 1.6x crop, it also doubles as a great portrait lens too. It's more money, but worth the extra. It will not fit a full frame camera though. The Canon 100mm would give you more distance work, including, but perhaps a point of view too flat for jewelry shots. Also a bit long for portraits, and lets face it, more expensive. Nearly twice the price of 50 mm f2.5. It really is a goal that is best for users to frame completely. I use the Sigma 70mm f2.8 EX DG macro, and that surpasses most other macro lenses in terms of resolution, cartoons, distorition. It is also a good portrait APS_C camera lens but can also work well in a full frame camera. It is not internal focus and the focus can be slow unless you decide in your area distribution and use of the limiter, but optically is almost unmatched.
