Is it the best brand for Canon digital SLR?

Hey guys, I'm ready to buy a digital SLR camera, and I keep hearing that Canon would be the better to go! I had a canon slr I've used for about 10 years with the film and it was amazing! But I'm ready for the digital age! I'm looking at a Canon 400D to start …. Do you think this is the way forward, or someone can tell me if there are others out there dslr they think is better! I'm not looking to be one, just love making photos for family and life! I'm in Australia so if anyone knows of any Australian shop that sells at a bargain price dslr would be great! I'm looking to buy my first digital camera and one that caught my attention was the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS, except that you will not find anywhere that you can buy from Australia. Does anyone know where I can buy in Australia? I am not really to order online. Or is there a camera you think is better? I am looking for a camera for photography using armor and just use every day, so you should have a decent picture zoom, and probably stabalising.
