which is better – the Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera Canon EOS or Rebel T1i House? What R the differences?

This is a gift that I would get for myself once the holidays are over. Currently I have a decent digital SLR camera, but I want to upgrade. How I can know what better if you can not even tell the difference between the two. Thank you for your help.
