Canon SLR Digital Rebel XT?

I have to be able to set the camera to take pictures of karate in the gym. I know how to do this with a standard film camera, but it is in this digital illuding. I can set it so great outdoors, but not yet in. The images come in black. Help! I have read and reread the manual and still I can not figure it out. How I can set the camera up to do it!

Raise the ISO number! Looks like you're not using the flash. Also, if you were using flash I had to use powerful study units also interfere with those who do karate. It is likely that the flash is blinding.
