Canon Ef S Lenses Explained
Suggested Lenses for Action Shots?

body: currently using a canon eos digital rebel xt.

lens: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/Canon-EF-80-200mm-f-4.5-5.6-II-Lens-Review.aspx with US

I’m into photographing horses and speed events (rodeo/barrel racing). I would like some suggestions on what I should start upgrading to, to make my shots better quality?

I was also wondering if: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx fits on a digital rebel? I’m getting the impression it doesn’t but I don’t know.

I’m not sure upgrading the body would be the greatest idea because I don’t even know how to use all the rebel’s features. If you could explain some parts on there too, that’d be great. Thanks.

That’s a nice lens, but is it the best lens for you? The IS feature may be of limited use shooting action, as you will still need a fast shutter speed to stop the action. The 200mm f’/2.8 might be a better choice ( http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-II-USM-Telephoto/dp/B000053HBB/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1227591561&sr=1-4 ), or if you can afford it, the 70-200mm f/2.8 ( http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-200mm-2-8L-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B00006I53W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1227591561&sr=1-2 ). There are less expensive zooms of similar spec available from Tamron and Sigma.

The best way to decide what to buy next is to analyze your shots to see what limitations your current equipment imposes. Then choose something that solves your most restrictive problems.

Camera 500D – Strong Model With Few Weaknesses

+ Very good image quality (for this price range I am very happy) (The most important reason to me)
(-) 15 MP irritates the kit lenses do not completely off (which makes this kit lens, however, already?).
– Image Stabilizer in the lens makes the lens a little more expensive.
+ If there is good in the hand. All the buttons easily accessible.
– The auto focus is out in difficult lighting situations and problems again.
+ Video mode (HD).
(-) Full HD “only” with 20 frames (The fact that the Camera 500D no video camera, I’ll explain in the section Video Quality)
+ Very good and Raw Series Exposure Mode

The picture quality is very tidy, even if the kit lens, the 15 MP of course, not exploits. This at least is at the top is no problem, because not everyone wants to spend even just 800 euros for a good lens. In retrospect, I regret it, but something I did not like the zoom lens with 18-200mm bought, for a lens in the telephoto range () is for zooming very highly recommended. (Otherwise I retrofitting: Canon EF-S 4,0-5,6 / 55-250 IS lens Canon EOS One disadvantage of the model that the image stabilizer is sitting in the lens, which makes them more expensive and offers only little advantage (The image is already stabilized in the viewfinder).

The high iso adjustability of the Camera 500D is indeed useful to take a snapshot of the night, but images beyond ISO 400 are generally well-conditioned. make (with the iso 1600 is no pictures for a poster print)

In handling, I think the relatively small and lightweight camera is ideal. Criticisms of the material, I can only barely understand, because the camera does not approve of the look and feel of the camera is not important to me personally.

The menus are somewhat confusing, at least initially, but no one buys dslr if you want to invest any time into it and after a while you find your way around easily. For a quick snapshot of the automatic mode delivers very good results.

For video quality. The video quality is great and looks good for a small video of family and for Youtube to create. (20 frames instead of 30 does not fall heavily on) However, you can adjust the focus during the shoot only manual and all other settings are made automatically.

This is very very annoying because the camera would be readily able to provide the user with such possibilities. (That is not the case, probably is because otherwise the appeal of video mode more expensive models would be lost and would like to earn money on these Canon). So far there are no hacks the firmware to fix this. The sound quality is ok.

I am very very happy with the Camera 500D. Although it has some weakened, but provides with me

could someone explain terms DX and AF-S Nikon terms?

Ok..i understand that canon has EF and EF-s lenses….the EF-s lenses only capable of being used on the cropped sensor cameras, but not full frame digitals or film cameras..

However, i don’t understand the nikon terms.

Does DX mean a cropped sensor. Are af-s lenses only for use with cropped sensor cameras, OR does af-s mean they have a built in focusing motor for nikon cameras without a focusing motor??

For that matter, do the canon cameras have a built in focusing motor?? I’ve never heard of this limitation with canon.

U have a very good understanding of the terms, actually.

DX lenses are designed for a cropped sensor on the Nikon system, although they also can also be used on Nikon’s full-frame digitals in a special “cropped” mode. DX lenses cannot be used on a film 35mm camera without getting some vignetting of the image.

AF-S refers only to having a built-in focusing motor in the lens. AF-S can include both DX and FX (full-frame) lenses. Sigma has a similar motor they call HSM, for hypersonic motor. U may sometimes hear the Nikon lenses referred to as “silent wave motors.”

Canon lenses have built-in motors in all their AF lenses, although not all of them are USM (ultrasonic motor) lenses.

The reason for the difference: years ago, when Canon switched to autofocusing lenses, they made a completely new mount, which made all their manual focus lenses incompatible. When Nikon went to an AF mount, they designed the AF system to keep the existing F-mount, which meant that some lenses were autofocused by the camera and newer lenses had the built-in motor. Initially, Nikon kept the motor in body on all new camera, but beginning with the D40, began making some bodies that only autofocused with lenses that had a built-in motor (D40, D40x, D60, and D5000).
