The total harmonic distortion or THD is a little more regular TLA (or three-letter acronyms) is likely to be in most specifications manufacturer. But what THD is so important and what level of THD is acceptable for Hi Fi and AV equipment?

When playing the audio signal from input stage and output stage of a hi-fi will be a certain amount of noise and distortion introduced a signal. Part of this distortion is created by the introduction of circuits and physical components of the harmonic signal in double and triple frequencies the original signal. These signals are added technically known as harmonic distortion. THD is a measure of the difference between the input stages of the system and extra sound signal at each harmonic. The THD calculation does not consider the relative level of each harmonic. EG: An output of the amplifier in the second harmonic can be higher than production in the third quarter. Another allows you to create equal levels in 3rd and 5th. Both amps sound very different, but could have the same set measure THD.
