What is the best digital SLR for me?

Hey guys, my name is Jesse. I've been a photographer with my Canon PowerShot SD1100IS Digital ELPH for 6 months. I'm tired of it and I want to upgrade to a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex Camera). I'm thinking about getting either a Nikon D80 but I really do not know why the shots look pretty bad from what Flickr photographers take. I like to capture macro, action and portraits. I want a camera with a price range ($ 400 – $ 900) lenses included. I'm not really sure to go with either a Canon or Nikon. I sure do not want a Nikon D40, D60 or Canon EOS XS. I want some Canon EOS 40D, but not I'm sure if it's so good. I want a kind of large but not bulky SLR. I want a body like the Nikon SLR D200 and D300 both have. Something big. We will win the best answer .. Please, guys. I really need your help. THANK YOU!
