Canon PowerShot SD1200 ELPH battery life?

I just got a Canon Digital ELPH PowerShot SD1200 is about two months, and he told me to change the battery, is this normal? I accidentally left in the USB port at night, and I do not think you've drained the battery, but I wonder if the security cover this, or if you go out and buy a new battery, I know I sound very stupid to ask but any help would be soooo much help, Thanks:)
