Is the Canon EOS Rebel XS a good camera?

I want the Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm IS 3.5-5.6 w Target / image stabilization (EOSREBELXS) and I have been wanting for a very long time! I know some people with him and I heard so many good comments and how their great! Was this a good camera to have because I do not want to have it for a year. I have it for a long time and finally I long ago! Is it a good camera? I want to get for Christmas! Basically what im asking is if this camera is good to last me for a very long time?

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi?
