Are you often confused to choose which digital camera is the perfect one for you? Have you ever asked your friends which camera brand is the best?

Well, first of all, the camera brand is not the only one that determines which one is the best. It depends on people’s interest. Some people find one brand is better than the other brands. In fact, there are many other elements which are more important. And I want to share to you how to choose the perfect digital camera.

Digital Photo Tips 1: Resolution

I am sure that you have seen cameras with high resolution, let’s say above 8 megapixels. It is actually more than enough to print a 10.2×13.6-inch photo. Unless you are a professional and want to print a billboard-size photo, you do not really need a very high resolution camera. High resolution means also bigger file size. I recommend you to use a lower resolution camera so that you can take much more pictures. About 8 megapixels would be perfect.

Digital Photo Tips 2: Optical Zoom

Optical zoom determine how far you can get close with the object. A 10-times-zoom camera is rather terrific, but not necessary. A 3 or 4-times-zoom camera is enough to capture most moments. If you need high zoom camera, check out the cameras that have image stabilizer or anti shake lens. It helps you to prevent blur because of hand shake.

Digital Photo Tips 3: Digital Zoom

It is no use to have a camera with high digital zoom. Why? Because it only lowers the image quality. Digital zoom simply resizes the image just like you resize images with computer.

Digital Photo Tips 4: ISO

Nowadays many digital cameras offer high ISO speed, up to 3200 or even 6400. It’s true that with high ISO speed, you will get higher shutter speed. But I do not recommend to use such high ISO speed, because it only worsen the image quality. It produces noise that will ruin you photos. 200 or 400 ISO speed would be optimal.

Digital Photo Tips 5: Program Settings

Make sure that the digital camera provides you the freedom to adjust the settings, such as the shutter speed, aperture, ISO speed, white balance, and any other useful functions. With this freedom, you can be more creative and take photos just like the image in your mind.

These are the basic elements you must consider before choosing the perfect digital camera. And with some experiences, you can even teach anyone how to choose camera too. It is that simple.

Which digital camera? Canon Ixus or Powershot?

I currently own an Ixus V3, which is rather old now! I would like to replace it in time for my next holiday, but I don’t know which. I like compact cameras, that’ll fit in my pocket (safer when being a tourist!), but I’d also like it to take a decent shot if my aim is right! I’m not much of a photographer, but I do get lucky with what I catch sometimes. I like to have a decent zoom and ease of use is important. I’m happy to pay up to £200.

Any suggestions?

I have a Powershot 700 and my girlfriend has an Ixus 800. We are both absolutely delighted with them. They both take great photos. The Powershot is a bit more programmeable and has a better optical zoom. The Ixus is easier to use and smaller.

I guess it really depends what you want to take photos of. They are both good cameras but I’d probably go for the Ixus based on useability.

One other factor is that the Ixus comes with a unique battery style (my girlfriend’s had a charger included) but the Powershot will take standard AA batteries if you’re nowhere close to your charger.
