Canon Ixus Underwater Casing
Underwater (Waterproof) Camera Case?
I have a digital camera (canon ixus 130).. i just got it a few months ago. I’m thinking of getting and underwater camera case (the waterproof case). Are they any good? And do you have any recommendations? Also if anyone has one.. is it easy to take a picture (to press the buttons and stuff)?
I would appreciate your advice and help.
Thanks!
Both the purpose-built case (i.e. the Canon WP-DC37 housing), and the housing offered by Ikelite (SD-1400is, IXY 400F) allow you to operate all the camera controls. The resistance may be a little higher than normal (unhoused), since the external controls will be spring-loaded, but this was never a problem for me with my housing (for a now-defunct Canon A380).
If you’re talking about one of those ‘resealable plastic bag’-type waterproof covers, then operating the smaller buttons may be a little more tricky than normal, especially at depth when the bag shrinkwraps itself tightly round the camera. I would avoid this option if I were you.
Whether you’re wanting a housing to take pictures at the pool/ beach, or SCUBA diving, I would go for the Ikelite–it’s approximately the same price as the Canon housing, but has a deeper depth rating (60 m vs. 40 m; implying better seals), and appears to allow (more) accessorisation (e.g. attachment of external strobe(s)/ wide-angle lenses), which will allow you to do more with it later (if you’re going diving with it).
If you ARE intending to take the camera diving, I would strongly recommend you sign up to do a (digital) underwater photography course for your first couple of dives with the camera (usually 2-3 dives, with an experienced instructor)–or at least, go with an experienced photographer who is willing to share some of that expertise.
Although your photography skills will certainly improve with time and practice, you will be able to streamline/leapfrog much of the ‘trial-and-error’ phase if you have some idea of what you’re doing in the first place. Also, you will learn how to set up and take care of your housing properly, reducing the chance of a leak/flood (which will destroy your camera).
While you are of course free to ignore this advice, you will then likely find that most of your (first couple of hundred) pictures come out blue/green and blurry–I have seen this scenario over and over again with (usually very frustrated) beginner underwater photographers.
All the best.

There are two types of cases Waterproof: those that store the camera and underwater photography. Case of underwater photography are designed to make it easier to take a picture. My advice is to buy a camera that is rated for underwater use, as these http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/new-waterproof-cameras_roundup.html
