Canon Lenses Plastic
Nikon D40 or Canon XS rebels?

well, both houses are in the same price range. I think Canon is more compatible with more objective while Nikon is compatible with AFS lenses only. I do not like the plastic body of the X from Canon. this would be my first DSLR …. What do you recommend?

Both are good cameras for what it really is a no lose for you to look at these two. But I've used Nikon since the 70's with great results (even I have the first Nikon I bought and I can take and it works just as well today as it did decades ago), so here is my recommnedation I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Progam flexible, aperature priority, the shutter-priority modes. These are the same in all modes of DSLRs. It also has several other modes planned for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learns to use metering better these additional modes rarely gets used so commonly found in cameras and seen as the armor is not needed for professional cameras. I feel I have a lot experience as a photographer and works well for me, but I can give my 12 years / grandchild or if you put on the program and you can get good pictures that may used as well. His photography is improving as is already learning to use many of the functions himself (yes, I am a proud Granpa). now Nikon has the best compatibility with earlier versions of the lens as a general rule the better performance of low noise at high ISO not get caught in the megapixel hype and instead of examining the entire sensor issue. See the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a rates. Comes with a 18-55 lens. It lets you use any other money to buy more accessories. And the time that cameras will surpass it advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had one a few months when the D700 came out. The Canon also serve you well but I'm a Nikon person so I suggest. I have friends who are very happy with their canon, and take great pictures. You have to like the other Pentax and Olympus cameras and they are not bad, but if they were in the same park that would be much more professional photographers use

Tripod for DSLR?

Hey all

I’m am amateur photographer looking for a better tripod. I use a Canon Rebel XT and have a few lenses, sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, Canon 28-135 IS USM, a battery grip, 430 EX flash, etc, so I typically have a few pounds that a tripod needs to be able to hold. I’m not really looking to spend over $250, and tired of plastic tripods. I also like to shoot vertically , so the tripod needs to be able hold the camera in that way as well. The tripod i use now moves the camera and is really jerky when you try to straighten the camera.

Thanks, -Steve

I use Tiltall (was called Leitz Tiltall then). It’s heavy (about 6 lbs), and seems to be very steady. For example, I mounted Canon 5D with battery grip with Canon 100 – 400 mm zoom on it and it hasn’t fallen over (mounted to the lens, not the camera). They come in three versions now–silver, black and rather gaudy gold.

I have had it for a while and it hasn’t fallened apart on me yet so I really don’t have to get a new one. However, it doesn’t have the quick release head-so it is a bit of a pain to connect or disconnect it. (It is available as an option). I do think however that if I have to get another, I will probably get a lighter, but fiberglass model (they’re not cheap, I hear).
