Canon Lenses Range
Canon lenses: is a 50mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.8 enough?

I bought the 50mm. I started looking for a zoom lens to cover other focal lengths, but then I started reading more about the 85mm f/1.8. Would this be a better choice than for example the Canon 28-105?

If I had the 50mm and the 85mm, would that be a decent pair to take around with me? It seems like it would be good for my purposes (sacrificing range for clarity and aperture) but does anyone have different opinions?

You would certainly have two very good lenses. However, with only a 50mm and an 85mm, I’d say you’ll likely find quite a few situations where you won’t be able to get further away or get close enough. I don’t know whether your using 35mm film, an APS-C digital or full frame digital, but in any case 50mm isn’t that wide and 85mm isn’t that long. You only have a focal length range of 35mm which isn’t that much really.
I suppose it really does depend on what you’re going to be shooting, but for now I’d recommend getting either a prime lens a bit longer than the 85mm or a zoom lens that will cover the range you’re missing. A 70-200 seems like a decent idea.

Good quality, reasonably priced lenses for canon?

What are some good quality, not too expensive ($0-$500 range) slr lenses that you would recommend?

I mostly shoot portraits, landscape/travel, and events.

Also, what would be a good “walk around” lens. As in a lens that would be suitable for most situations.

Thanks!

Actually you only need one lens to do all of that. Check out the Tamron XR Di 28-300mm, f3.5-6.3. I use it a lot even for my pro assignments in the field. It’s light and takes photos better than the Canon non-L (pro) lenses. And it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than Canon’s lenses.
I have many Canon L pro lenses but seem to always go back to the Tamron. Works on APS-C sensors and full frame sensors too.
Check the reviews on dpreviews.com for specifics.
I’ve had it for a while but I think I paid less than $400. for it-new.
Sigma also makes some fine lenses as does Tokina.
