What is the best digital SLR for amateur photographers?

I've been waiting for a digital SLR for a while now and many of there today that I am not sure of purchase. I was thinking of a Canon Powershot G9, but I'm not sure. I am an amateur, but I'm planning on doing this to live someday. I'm not sure if Canon is the best in the market or what. I too was considering Nikon … I'm still not sure. I would like keep the price under $ 550 if possible! All sites or comments would be a great help. Personal experience with any of these DSLR would be very helpful as well:] Thanks!
