What do you think is better? Canon EOS Rebel XT or Nikon D50?

Im thinking of buying my first SLR. I've been shooting with a Canon Powershot ELPH 2.3mp and has some very good shots. Looking to move on to something easy to use and master. I have knowledge of the use of litle or photo SLR (though I think learning!). What is your comment on these two as a first-time SLR?

The two models I have chosen are the Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9. Which one would be better for an all around camera?
