Canon Powershot Pro Series S3 Is
What’s a good camera for a 17 year old?
I’m looking for a new digital camera to replace the one I’ve had for the past 4 years. I love taking pictures, but I’m not a very experienced photographer. Mostly I take pictures while on vacation, and since I’m going to Europe this summer, I want a much better camera than I already have.
I’ve been looking at the Canon PowerShot Pro Series S3 IS 6MP with 12x Image Stabilized Zoom , but I don’t know if it’s the right thing for me.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
The S3-IS is an excellent camera. It is being replaced by the new S5-IS very soon, so if you can wait a few weeks, you will see the prices on the S3 start to drop.
Another camera to shop for is the Canon SD700-IS, which is being replaced by the SD850-IS – a very nice camera itself. The SD700 doesn’t have near the zoom range as the S3, but it’s a LOT smaller, which might help when you are traveling.
I’d watch for both of these cameras to drop to around $250, but there is always the risk that they will disappear from the market if you wait too long.
If money is not an issue, of course, just wait until the replacement models are out (soon) and choose from between those two. The SD850-IS will be around $400 and the S5-IS will be around $500.

I’m ready to buy the Canon PowerShot Pro Series S3 IS 6MP with 12x Image Stabilized Zoom… Deal or No Deal?

I think it’s a good price. Amazon had it down around $340 a few weeks ago, that’s the lowest I’ve seen.
My gf has an S3 and she and I are both generally quite impressed with it. Battery life is EXCELLENT with the new Maha 2700 batteries and there are a few minor improvements over the S2 that make it fun to use. (She previously had an S2.)
