What level digital camera input to use?

I like the Canon 400D, I used a few times, but beyond my reach prices. I was planning an agreement that gives clear and beautiful images and can also be injected with reasonable night. I thought that perhaps PowerShot S3 IS or the Pro1. I do not want to just stick to Canon, but to be honest I do not know much about appliances, but I want to learn taking pictures really well. Has anyone known of similar cameras that are around the price range of PowerShot, but the value of money?

I have the Kodak picture machine comes with 5 pxl MGA and I bought a memory disk so you have like 300 pictures. I can put my photos on your computer and turn the camera on the dock and print quality photos to Kodak home. 350.00, plus additional disk 75.00 Christmas, I bought 05 and it has paid for itself 10 times. Shopping for the best in a store or club. Best purchase ever.
