Unit Photo Geek Alert: House of the law – if the right job
For surfbum
Be warned, I am a self professed geek camera. I think cameras are like surfboards, there is a surfboard tremors and waves right camera-work.
The PowerShot S90 is – by far – my new "go to "pocket camera and I always carry with me in my bag travel. I used for almost a month and after a few thousands of shots, but now I am become familiar with its functionality. This is not the camera to buy his stepmother for Christmas. She will never talk to you again.
My other units are as follows:
Canon 7D – with "L-series lenses.
Pentax W60 (waterproof) – the surfing, sailing, cycling, hiking, skiing and delivery for children to fight the heads of others.
Canon SD980 – it was my pocket * * high quality of the camera, but now is relegated exclusively to photography Diving W (since I have the U / W cases anyway and live with the fear that my PowerShot S90 meets the same fate as my 80 and flooded PowerShot diving with sharks in Tahiti).
Here's the deal with new PowerShot S90: If you're ready to dive into the submenus, the experience would be a very, very powerful arsenal room. You do what the G11 can do, but for the size you might have to work a little more initially to calculate the curve of the feature. It's like fly. Once your familiar with the controls (which takes a while) the interface becomes transparent and we can do just about anything you want. But it will take a large amount of tinkering. No lie.
I'll let the reviews of image quality for professional sites, but only provide what the results are very good for the size of the camera. The best low light performance in its class, time, and I tried everything, including the LX3 (which is also good, but damn I love noisier – the 24mm lens though).
In short, if you want to buy a SLR SLR quality. You will not get the same results with the PowerShot S90. Duh. If you do not like small cameras or large fingers, then perhaps you should look something like the G11. The PowerShot S90is * too * small for all its features, but is the dichotomy, no? The functionality is there, but the design sometimes have to interface frustrating overcrowding. That said, this camera is very good it is: a pocket camera with a fast lens which can rotate in RAW.
Let's talk about size. I agree that the quality of construction * Look at first less expensive than what you expect. However, if the spheres, and the shutter are solid in the days of real life for everyday use. Especially from the shutter. To honest, it's a little strange, but we can not deny the light and love which is smooth and flat, and fits easily in your pocket. Is as small that any pact with the exception of the ring of the lens / packaging and while I wish that the package is not there, is what it is and feature of this ring is surprisingly impressive. Certainly pocket on the LX3. The screen is nice and do not miss the display at all.
The Update / flash down is irritating and please do not break, but I must admit there is less red-eye that most cameras (presumably, it why they went to the design). While the engine does nothing because I do not want to keep the flash when it comes to pop-up I'll live with it and pulls my hat off to Canon engineers.
The functionality is impressive control ring and the function button ring is very, very functional and is being day for each mode as "you select. This way, you can set your camera to photograph high speed different to say the TV picture Nice Av.
In this feature, which makes the camera what you want really a question of knowledge of the camera. After one month, I can finally settle opening, shutter speed, and four-way manual white balance without even thinking. ISO, bracketing the exposure intensity Flash, measurement and continuous shooting are a single click / spin button / / spin away. Once you've memorized the provision of the function parameters of exposure are relatively quick and painless. And of course you have the control ring and outer ring feature gives instant access to two of your time settings the most important ISO, metering, manual focus, white balance, zoom, aperture, shutter speed. You are really lose the power of this device if you have just left AV so you can take "quickly."
Phew. Exhausted yet? If are then maybe this unit is not for you.
No, seriously.
However, if you're willing to commit Canon gave the tools to get the photo you want. Or I suppose that could leave it on Auto.
I'll see if I can find a way to download some Photos from the sample, but here are some real life experiences I had. Day shots of New York skyline are beautiful. A little more flexible compared to a Canon 7D with a L series lens, but as I said before, duh. The vaccine against the same during the night can be achieved without a tripod approximately 1 / 60 second. N fuzzy. In an English Beat concert the other night I was taking pictures at f2.0 (wide) and one hundredth of a second. Not always fast enough, but five times what he could do with my SD980. Leave ISO100 and 800 as an accelerator noise While the setting of the concert as sensation. Ice skating at night in Rockefeller Center (well lit), I was taking pictures without flash as if it was day. In summary, this camera rocks.
UPDATE: The low light pictures uploaded to Amazon. Search New York skyline and photos next concert. Unfortunately Amazon resolution is limited, but you get the idea that you can get away with it.
I do not understand is the 640×480 video. I wonder why why, why, knowing very well that engineering is a response that has not found its place again in the Interwebs. Somewhere in the software / hardware in the mixture must be an answer why not, including high-definition video is inexplicable to me. On the other hand, most video I take with this type of camera is just uploaded to YouTube anyway that 640×480 is fine. That is my definition of a camera dedicated high. One thing I would add the sound quality is much better than any other single point and shoot I've used. I am not sure what happens with that, but it is much more clear base. Type a pleasant surprise, really.
At the end of the day is a great camera and a worthy successor to my beloved (and floods) Canon S80. * For the smallest camera quality * You can currently buy the PowerShot S90 is the same. There are some problems, but rather fast lens makes it bearable. If you want an SLR like interface and are willing to sacrifice size, then you should take a serious look at the G11 (or similar). This camera is too small for this type of interface and the same time the higher level functions are intuitive (opening, shutter speed, ISO) will invest a bit to go deep. The beauty is, you can!
Conclusion: If I lost this camera today, I would buy another tomorrow. From a geek who runs the camera world that speaks volumes.
