Canon Powershot Sd700
Canon PowerShot A710 , SD800, SD700 which one is better?
hi,
I’m considering this three camera, could anyone tell me the pros and cons of this 3 camera compare to each other.
I’m not so impressed with the SD800, because the widest end of the 28 mm lens does not review that well and then you are left with “only” 105 mm (equiv) at the tele end. And it costs more than the other two, so why bother?
The A-series and SD-series are aimed at different markets. The A seem to be more “serious” cameras and she SD seem to be more “stylish” cameras. There really is not that much difference in the two and indeed, the reviews put them in about a tie for all areas considered. B&H has them at the exact same price today, so price is not the issue.
The A710 is big enough that it won’t slip into a shirt pocket the way the SD700 will. This is partly due to the “AA” batteries that it uses. Some would prefer the “AA” batteries, because you can always pick up a set on the road if your rechargeable batteries die. The A710 lets you control the shutter speed and aperture in certain modes and the SD700 does not. This might make the difference in getting the “great” shot instead of just a “good” shot. The A710 also goes to an equiv. 210 mm and the SD700 stops at 140 mm. To me, this is quite a difference.
I just got an SD900 as my “pocket” camera for those times I just don’t want to lug an SLR with me, like yesterday’s family birthday party for a 1 year old. I much prefer the size and feel of an SLR as this thing is just tiny. It takes great pictures, but it feels like a toy in my hands and I have to be careful not to block the flash with the fleshy part of my index finger hanging over the top of the camera. I’m getting used to it. I think I’d prefer the feel of the larger A710, but I really wanted a pocket-sized camera.
If this was going to be a purchase for ME and if this was going to be my main camera, I personally would choose the A710. If size matters, then the SD700 is still an excellent camera that only limits your abilities slightly compared to the A710.
Check out this comparison page. Click on “In-depth review” and “Read Owner Opinions” for each camera. Be sure to note that the reviews are many pages long so you don’t stop after page one. Check the sample images, also. You can enlarge these to full size images if you click on the link below the picture. You will have to then put your cursor in the white space to the right of the picture and click once. After that, you can pass your cursor over the image and it will turn into a magnifier. Click it as a magnifier once and the image will go to full size and you can really examine the detail or look for artifacts like fringing or noise.

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS or Canon PowerShot SD630?
I like the fact that the sd700 IS has a Stabilized Zoom. I don’t know if I should pay a little more money for it though or if the sd630 will do fine without it….anyone own one of these?
I have the SD700 IS and I really like it. Its so compact and fun to use. (it’s my handbag cam) lol.
AS the Doc says…the SD630 has no optical viewfinder, which means you will always have to use the LCD screen to compose your photos. However, most people who have a small compact camera will never, ever use the viewfinder. You would mainly use it if your battery is low and you then turn off the LCD to conserve battery power…so you can get a few more shots before the battery dies. (regular charging or buying a second, backup battery is always an option).
The optical viewfinder on these small cameras is nothing to write home about though, (they only show approx. 82% of the scene).
The SD630 has a large 3.0″ LCD, 6MP, 3x optical (and recently won a European award for ‘best ultra compact’) so it’s a good camera.
The SD700 IS has a 2.5″ LCD screen, 6MP, 4x optical and an image stabilizer…and I think it looks more stylish compared to the SD630.
Either one is good…it might just depend on your budget, but if you don’t need such a big screen, get the SD700 IS.
