Why digital camera for both the audio distortion?

I had a 1100-IS Canon Powershot and had great audio / video without audio distortion. I would need for concerts, band practices would record, in perfect clarity …. Well, I have the new Canon Powershot SX200 IS, which is a big step above 1100 and 1200, is due to MP 12.1 shoots 720p high-definition video …. buuuuuut, the audio is horrible! I took it to a concert and the audio was all horrible and distorted. I for sure this would be a larger camera. However, in low noise, the camcorder has perfect sound, but nothing strong, as a band, live music, which sounds horrible! Any suggestions or kinks that I can do to get better sound from this camera? It seems you're overloading the input amplifier, which would distort the sound. Looking over the manual, I have no manual control for this. I try calling Canon and see if they have a solution. If not try putting your finger over the hole of the microphone during band practice tape or something on it. Ugly, but it might work.
