Canon EF-S lenses are designed by Canon for amateur photographers. They only work with Canon camera bodies that have a 1.6x field of view crop factor (FOVCF) image sensor. These camera bodies include the following:

Canon EOS Digital Rebel Series, Canon EOS 50D, 40D, 30D, 50D, 10D and 7D.

The image sensor on these camera bodies is smaller than that of more expensive, professional grade Canon bodies. As a result, the whole of an image produced by EF mount Canon lenses does not reach the image sensor. Canon EF-S lenses are designed to work only with the smaller 1.6x FOVCF sensor. While Canon produces these lenses for consumer grade photography, they still produce great results.

There are several choices to make when selecting an EF-S lens. Image quality, build quality, versatility and value vary from lens to lens. While most EF-S lenses are affordable and functional tools that are build for consumers, there are a few that stand out from the rest. The following lenses are considered some of the highest quality and most cost effective lenses of the EF-S series:

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens

This lens is a great performer at a very unique focal length. The 10-22mm is produces awesome results despite the difficulty many lenses have in delivering sharpness corner to corner with ultra wide focal lengths. Additionally, the focal length is perfect for expanding creativity. Even some professionals envy the quality to price combination this lens delivers. It makes a great second or third lens.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens

The 55-250mm EF-S mount lens is a great all-purpose lens for travel. The wide range of the 55-250mm focal length works well for many applications and image stabilization is a great feature for low light shooting. Many amateurs use this lens as a primary walkround lens for every type of photography.

This is arguably the best walkaround lens in the EF-S range of lenses. It offers great image quality in an affordable and versatile package. Image stabilization also makes the lens effective several stops lower than an f/4 maximum aperture would normally allow. Many use this lens as a primary lens for everyday shooting.

Question about SLR Camera Lenses?

I want to buy the Canon EOS 500D, (information on this page: http://www.canon.com.au/Search?ss=500d) but was wondering why the ‘Enthusiast Kit’ was two-hundred more dollars than the ‘Twin IS Lens Kit’ when the twin lens kit obviously includes two lenses.

The Enthusiast Kit includes:
“The EOS 500D Enthusiast Kit includes the EOS 500D Body, and the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM.”

The Twin IS Lens Kit includes:
“The EOS 500D Twin IS Lens Kit includes the EOS 500D Body, with the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS and EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS.”

Whats the advantage of getting the Enthusiast Kit?

The advantage would be that with one lens, you would not have to change lenses, and thus minimize the chance of getting dust on the sensor. But also the quality of the 17-85mm is better that the other two. Yes, you do get more range with the 55-250mm, but the key here is quality.

I second the idea of getting the body only, and adding an “L” lens. Check out this one:

It is not expensive – it is an investment.
