In the 2003 Dakar rally raid, Volkswagen has entered a team pulling back Tarek buggy. VW said the sixth rank, led by Stephane Henrard and co-driver Bobby Willis. The following year, the Dakar Rally in 2004 saw the debut rally of the T2 class built by the Race Touareg Volkswagen Motorsport. Bruno Saby and co driver Matthew Stevenson said sixth. In the 2005 Dakar Rally, Jutta Kleinschmidt and co driver Fabrice Pons said the third place the Race Touareg.
In the 2006 Dakar Rally, Volkswagen Giniel de Villiers and Tina Thorner co pilot claimed the second highest in history for a diesel in the new Race Touareg 2. He has a shorter wheelbase than the original Race Touareg and the increased visibility. For the 2007 Dakar Rally Volkswagen Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford led the Race Touareg 2 4th overall. In 2008, the Central Europe Rally, Sainz drove his Race Touareg 2 victory. Finally, in the edition 2009 Dakar Rally, Volkswagen has achieved a double.
