Eos 1ds Mark Iii Prices
What’s the difference between a canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and a canon EOS 1D Mark IV?

I’m planning on replacing my Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II with either the Mark III or Mark IV. I absolutely love that the Mark IV can film in 1080p at adjustable frame rates. Especially with say. The EF f/1.2 85mm USM. That aside what are the visible differences of the two? Aside from price or course. I know the Mark III has a larger censor and higher color depth as well as a much better noise reduction at large ISO.

Thanks

There is some confusion here:

The latest version of the 1Ds is the mark 3, there is no mark 4 as yet.

The latest version of the 1D is the mark 4.

The 1Dsmk3 is full frame and has 21MP, but no video mode. It is a reasonably fast camera like the 1DsMk2, but not a speed freak. A great camera for portriature, landscapes, and to be fair, pretty darned excellent at everything else.

The 1Dmk3 however, is one to avoid, like the mark 4 it has the cropped sensor (larger than the rebels, smaller than the 5 or 1Ds series cameras) but the AF system was a bugger. Many users went back to their 1DmkII’s or 1DmkIIn’s. Canon issued various firmware fixes and recalls, but the camera never regained professional confidence. Things were so bad that some people even switched to Nikon. Also the 1Dmk3 lacks the video mode, and would mean a drop from 16mp to 10.

The 1DmarkIV on the other hand has sorted the AF issues, would be a straight swap in terms of stills resolution (although on a cropped sensor, not full frame, so your EF lenses would still mount, but would in effect be more telephoto) and it gains video. It also has a faster frame rate.

To be frank, it seems that the video is what appeals.

I would keep shooting on the 1DsMk2 for now, and get a 550d (T2i) or 600D (T3i) for video.

If you want both full frame, max resolution and HDvideo then the other option is the 5Dmk2.

Far less sophisticated AF, far less rugged construction (not bad, just not a 1D series)

The 1Ds series is quite long overdue for an upgrade, and the 5D2 is now 3 years old, so it is probably worth holding back just now to see what is launched this year.

If you really really hanker after video, then treat it as a second camera and get a t2i or t3i. Compact, cheap, and will be handy as a back up cam in the future. Otherwise wait.

FYI, be careful not to confuse the 1d cameras with the 1ds cameras, the 1D cameras are much more geared towards sports, action, nature, the 1Ds cameras are geared more towards photojournalism, absolute image quality etc. Both are excellent series of cameras (except the 1Dmk3) but with slightly different applications.
