Question about sound monitoring the cameras?

I just got a film camera, but no headphone jack for monitoring sound. What I plan to do is put a headphone splitter on cable from an external microphone to the camera. This allows me to hear the sound directly from the microphone, but no actual audio output from the camera. Do you think it be okay, it's going to be enough? It is an EOS 7D, what are the chances that does not record audio properly? I will not make any major film, I'm just an independent filmmaker. Thanks for the help =)
