Overwhelmed trying to choose the lens for my Canon EOS … please help!?

Ok, so my husband and I are starting a photography business, and we a Canon Rebel Xti. (Yes, I know we need a better camera, I'm waiting for the 7D soon, but for now we are focusing on getting a great lens.) We only $ 800 to spend at the moment, and I've been obsessively searching on Craigslist and eBay. The lens I want is the 24-70 2.8L. I heard it's one of the best Series L. Anyone know if this is true? The type of Canon said it would do us all we need. (We engagement shoot, family, children, newborns, etc) Does anyone know where I can get a good price on this objective? What about the Sigma version for Canon? Do you even compare? I'm so crushed … I would love help and understanding. Thanks in advance!

I have a Rebel XS now that I'm doing most Internet hops and work. I have a Tamron 18-200 that rarely leaves my camera because it is very versatile.
