ERR 99 on my Canon XT?

I've been having a problem with my camera and Sigma lenses that came with my EOS Rebel SLR standard. I have one message 99 err time I try to take a photo with my Sigma 80-300 lens. I have read a few sites, and they all say that it is dirty contacts. Several times I have cleaned contacts. The only way to get an image is at full zoom, and put on the normative action. Everything works fine.

Err 99: In your own mauual on page 157 a different from the previous error has accrued, Delete and reinstall the battery. This error can occur if you use a Canon lens and no camera or lens is not working properly as a result. Some of the older lenses are not compatible with the XT. Try using the manual focus and see if it works. Hope this helps.
