Camera Help? Suggestions anyone?

I'm thinking about buying a digital SLR camera and am torn between the Nikon and Canon D5000 EOS Rebel XSi EF-S 18-55IS Kit-liner I'm more on the Nikon if but I need professional help. I'm an amateur photographer and I do not need advice from a hobbyist me. No offense:) Could you please give me the pros and cons of both houses and that you think is better between the two. If you have other suggestions for the camera please rate fixing must be SLR though. I have a $ 700 budget so please do not give me suggestions that are too expensive.
