A Canon EF 28-90 mm lens work on a XSi?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel K2 film camera that comes with a kit lens Canon EF 28-90 mm. I'm thinking to go digital and I will buy a EOS Rebel XSi. My question is if my old lens in the new camera working so could only buy and change the body out. I finally, in the very distant future, wants to buy more nice lens, but in reality you can afford at this time. Do they work very differently? I'm not knowledgeable about the subject. As a side note, does anyone know how good the EF-S 18-55IS is? Should I can buy the XSi as a kit or buy a / lens better?
