canon powershot sx100 IS?

would anyone recommend the Canon Powershot SX100 IS for a beginner. I have had a digital camera in the past, but it is rather old. I am going to be touring Europe and I was wondering if someone has any opinions on whether or not this would be a good fit for me?

Also, I would be willing to learn to use it- just as long as it isn’t completely manual

You will certainly be able to take good pictures with this camera. Canon cameras are all excellent quality picture takers when used properly and you sound like you are willing to take the time to read the instruction book and take a little time to get familiar with your new camera, so you should do just fine and get great pictures with this camera.
I have one issue with this camera that you should be aware of before you buy it. The camera does not have any kind of a peep site or thru the lens viewfinder. The only way you have to see the picture you are getting is from the LCD monitor on the back of the camera, and this can be very difficult to see outside in bright light. You probably would be better off with a PowerShot SD800IS or a PowerShot S5IS, both of which have similar features and viewing options far easier to see what you are actually getting in your picture under bright light conditions than the SX100IS. These cameras cost a little more (not much) but the extra viewing ease in bright light conditions is well worth the few extra dollars you will spend.

can you change a lens on theCanon PowerShot SX100 IS 8-Megapixel Digital Camera ?

i would like to put a professional lens on this camera and what kind of lens would you recommend ?
plz answer asap
thank you

The SX100 is not capable of taking on any lenses, adapters or filters. It does not have threads around the lens barrel for this. Some SX100 owners have come up with homemade mounts and rigs for attaching filters and adapters to get around this limitation. The S5 and A720 allow an adapter to be attached.
