Sigma 17 70
What lens for Nikon D5000?

I want to do something a little better than 18-55 VR kit lens that comes with Nikon D5000. I prefer to buy the body only and get something that is an all around f3.5 lens, but a bit faster than the low light. Is the Sigma 17-70 HSM 2.8-4.5 be a good choice?

Getting both is cheaper than 17-70. The Sigma is useless because it is only half of a stop faster than the 18-55 but lost the image stabilization, not to mention who is third. The top 35 is more than 1-1/2 to 4 stops faster than the 1918 to 1955.
