Rebel XSi – Great Step Up From S3-East
The Rebel XSi is not a great point and shoot high quality. The learning curve was short during the transition from the S3 "YES" to the Rebel XSi. Some functions are actually easier to use in the XSi rebels in S3.
The size and weight of the camera is reasonable, I have the Rebel XSi with Sigma 18-200mm Zoom tied in a pouch attached M-Rock Glacier on the handlebars of my bike. Some of my photos can be found on Flickr, where I go by the name of "Versageek"
A warning to those who move to the fair "point and shoot" a reflex (SLR applies to most digital is not only one): Although the 18-55mm lens is ideal for macro shots, when used for 10-12x zoom in a point and shoot, it must buy other lenses cost between $ 500 – $ 1000 +. You'll also need an extra battery (~ $ 50), a 58mm UV filter mist protect your lens (~ $ 40 +), a robust camera bag (~ $ 80 +) and a good tripod (~ $ 120 +).
Rebel XSi – Updated XSi or 40D? I went to Rebel XSi
I was a weather photographer. Back in the 80s I'm in the 35 mm cameras with a Canon AE1 and A1. Then he bought a rebel 35 mm and used for many years (yet). A couple of years, I bought a camera Rebel XT digital camera, be updated soon XTi. The camera has been impressive and I've never had any problem with none of them. Like most updates, however, each new model provided new useful things that have made the new camera-much better than the prev.
I will not write all "of the camera does this and that" type things that everybody has already written. You can go on Canon website for all specifications. But I will say that I bought a lot on Amazon for years and never had a single problem. I decided to go to my local photo store for this purchase, however, only because I wanted to manage the camera and play with him some time before taking decision.
I was torn between improving the Rebel XSi or 450D. I had heard many rumors that the 40D will soon replaced by a new more advanced model. As I write this does not happen yet. Having played both, and play with them for several hours in my shop (think first seller of nuts!) I have to say:
There is no doubt that the 450D is a larger camera bulky seem more resistant. Without But it is too big for me. It is much heavier, but the grip and how they are larger. The processer and the guts are essentially the same in both cameras and some of the characteristics of the Rebel XSi is actually more advanced (as a model most recent.) viewfinder of the Rebel XSi is clearer and clearer in the Rebel XSi and I liked the overall feeling better (perhaps something to do be familiar with the XTi). The overall sound operation of the device seems very good. Very professional.
The 40D really was too robotic for me when the shutter is used or the flash fired. The Live View function on the Rebel XSi does have a further option on 40D not very good for me since I'm like macro photography. More importantly, the device is easy to use and very easy to use. The with manual is quite detailed, but still recommended to buy a book on the correct spare parts Rebel XSi to really get to know. I really could not see spending $ 400 more for the 40D. I prefer to put in a goal of Nice.
Finally, I decided to spend less money and get a great camera to keep me happy few years how much I'm sure the last and largest side of the camera already on sale and I'm ready for a new one! 
If you're in the market for a camera that will do whatever you want it do, get the Rebel XSi. Whether an armature, pro or simply a member of the family looking to take great pictures of their children and events, this device meets your needs. With the right lens of the camera takes quality photos in magazines. If you can not afford it, get Rebel XSi on, also takes great pictures. And if you have a lot of money to spend and want just a camera again, the 40D is not there.

70-300mm Tele / Marco, Sigma or Tamron?
I have done much research on Sigma Tamron 70-300mm and 300mm Tele-70 / Marco lens. but we still the voice of someone on these two objectives. Preface – I, Guy Nikon MA … but I am not biased against Canon. They make great stuff too. These two elements have always been very popular in my small experience. I got a Canon one if possible. I would also say that I have two Tamron lenses and I like a third party lens manufacturer … but not the aim everything they do is golden. No manufacturer of lenses, including Nikon and Canon are a target of 100% perfect every time it is. The Tamron I have are 17-50mm f/2.8 Di and 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6. The 17-50mm is more than the average contrast and sharpness, as good or better than the equivalent Nikon, in my opinion. The 28-200mm lens is a complete system and use my film and my Nikon digital. It is slightly above average and I can push amazing images of her … but it requires further processing that 17-50mm. I also have the Nikon 50mm f/1.8, 35-70mm f/3.3-4.8 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR. All these goals are large and do not break the bank. I suppose that summarize … If you can wait a little longer and save more money and just buy the equivalent Canon lens, were more likely to be happier.
