How I can use my Speedlite 430EX II?

My boyfriend bought me for my 430EX II Speedlite Canon EOS XSI witch has a base EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. I love taking pictures and sometimes I'm good at that. But I'm clueless about how to use the flash. It's a long story I want to take pictures of my nieces baptism comes be in a church and want to use my flash, but I want to use it. Can anyone help me??
