Canon AE-1 or a digital SLR?

I've been getting into photography, but I just used a bad point and shoot digital camera for good photos … I found a Canon AE-1 in my basement, with an adaptation of the lenses and such …. but I know nothing about the camera, how it works, and what would help me learn about it … so I thought maybe a new camera would be better, as it may be easier to use. whether you can say anything about where to find a way to use it properly and / or suggestions for a better SLR that would be great!
