Canon Camera will not d/l images to computer?

I have a usb cord that I plug into the back of the computer. I have a 8 month old Canon PowerShotSD1000 Digital ELPH whatever that means. I Plug it in to the USB port as I usually do and ADOBE pops up and FREEZES. No images DL. I have tried manually downloading them also and that does not work either.. anyone know what this might be?
I also have a memory card in my camera which I put into the memory card port on my computer and the images will not dl. It doesn’t even recognize them memory card at all. And I know the pictures are there because I can see them on the camera.

When you insert your memory card into the computer’s card reader…have you tried looking in My Computer? The memory card should show up as a Removable Drive. Double click on it…and if the images are there, then Copy and paste them to the hard drive.
After you have done that, and made sure all images are safely on your hard drive…put your memory card back into your camera and then format the card (in the camera’s Menu).
